Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino has revealed a simple strategy. He used personal conversations to help Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman. Lookman has now fully regained his impressive form.
The Nigerian international faced a challenging period. He struggled under former coach Ivan Juric, scoring only once in 11 matches. This difficult start followed a frustrating summer. A potential move to Inter Milan did not happen. Lookman also had a touchline clash with Juric during a Europa League game against Marseille.
New Leadership Brings Change
Atalanta soon parted ways with Juric. Palladino then took over as the new manager. His first match ended in a defeat to Napoli. However, the team quickly turned things around. They secured crucial victories against Eintracht Frankfurt and Fiorentina.
Ademola Lookman was instrumental in these wins. He scored in both games. These were his first goals since the previous season. He now appears to be settled and performing well again.
Palladino Praises Squad’s Response
Speaking after the triumph over Fiorentina, Palladino lauded his squad’s efforts. “It has been a good week,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “We had a Champions League victory and a Serie A win. The latter had been missing for some time.”
He acknowledged the opposition. “We faced a resilient opponent today. They truly wanted a result.” However, Atalanta showed great patience. They also created many scoring opportunities. “There was a risk of conceding,” Palladino added. “But our forwards were very clinical.”
“I saw what I expected,” the coach continued. “Now, we must maintain this momentum. The credit goes to the players. I simply introduced my ideas and tactical principles.”
The Conversation That Changed Everything
Palladino explained that Lookman’s improved displays stemmed from a direct discussion. “With Lookman, I did the same thing I did with the rest of the team,” he stated in comments quoted by Tutto Atalanta. “I spoke with him individually.”
“A few words were enough,” Palladino noted. “He is a smart guy. He understands things quickly. I was clear, and he was very clear with me. We both want to move in the same direction. We both aim to elevate Atalanta as high as possible.”
The manager highlighted Lookman’s all-around contribution. “He’s doing a great job in attack. But I must emphasize his defensive contribution too. He is fully engaged in the match. I am delighted about his goals. He is an essential asset to the team.”
This return to form by Ademola Lookman is excellent news. Nigeria will welcome it as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His consistent performance will be vital for the Super Eagles’ campaign.
