Olisa Metuh, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr. Metuh had previously stated his resignation from partisan politics three years ago. He is now returning to the political arena. He chose the APC platform. He credited APC members for their crucial support during his difficult times.
The former PDP official made this announcement on Sunday. It took place at a thanksgiving service in Abuja. The event marked his 60th birthday.
Several prominent figures attended the event. These included Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma. Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim was also present. Former governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Ikedi Ohakim (Imo) were there. Senators Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye also graced the occasion. Many other dignitaries joined them.
Why Metuh Joined the APC
Speaking to journalists after the service, Mr. Metuh expressed his readiness. He wants to contribute to Nigeria’s development. He plans to do this through the APC.
Despite recent defections, he believes Nigeria is not heading towards a one-party state. Mr. Metuh acknowledged Nigeria’s current challenges. He pledged his commitment to strengthening the nation’s democracy.
He stated, “I aim to assist the Federal Government. I want to help the President deliver good governance. I have observed the progress and challenges. As a patriotic Nigerian, I wish to help resolve these issues.”
Personal Travails and Shifting Loyalties
During his testimony, Mr. Metuh spoke about his past struggles. He noted, “When I faced difficulties, my party was absent. Those I worked for were also nowhere to be found.”
He continued, “My family and I endured court proceedings alone. Yet, someone I often criticized reached out. This was President Tinubu, then the opposition leader. We found reasons to criticize him weekly.”
He explained, “During my ordeal, he sent Femi Gbajabiamila, then Speaker of the House. Mr. Gbajabiamila visited me. President Tinubu comforted and assisted me greatly. This came from a former political adversary.”
Metuh concluded, “You reap where God intends, not necessarily where you sow. I wish the PDP well. I dedicated my life to the party. However, I have now moved on.”
A Call for Vibrant Opposition
Addressing concerns about a one-party state, Mr. Metuh reassured the public. He believes many credible opposition figures exist. They will prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party system.
He named prominent individuals. These include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark. He stressed their credibility. “Many such people exist,” he affirmed.
Previous Invitations from President Tinubu
Mr. Metuh revealed past invitations from President Tinubu. He was asked to join the ruling party multiple times. He had consistently declined these offers.
He elaborated, “It took me years to re-engage in politics. I received many calls. The President desired to collaborate with me. Even after our 2015 election loss, he contacted me again.”
He continued, “In 2022, I left politics. President Tinubu invited me to join his party. I declined. After his election win, I visited him. He urged me to join, saying he needed me. I refused, citing my exit from politics.”
“Now that I am back in politics, I want to help. Perhaps I can be an effective voice here. My goal is to foster a healthy political environment. As I mentioned, our democracy needs room to grow. We need a strong, vibrant opposition. Citizens must be able to express their views freely. There is much work to be done,” he added.
