Olisa Metuh, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He announced his return to partisan politics on the APC platform. Metuh stated he had resigned from politics about three years ago. His decision stems from the unwavering support he received from APC members when he faced challenges.
The former PDP official made this declaration on Sunday. It occurred during a thanksgiving service marking his 60th birthday. The event took place in Abuja.
Several prominent figures attended the service. They included Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, and former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim. Other notable guests included former governors: Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), and Ikedi Ohakim (Imo). Senator Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye were also present.
After the service, Metuh spoke to journalists. He expressed readiness to contribute to Nigeria’s development through the APC. Despite recent defections, Metuh does not believe Nigeria is heading towards a one-party state.
He acknowledged the nation’s current challenges. However, he pledged his quota to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. Metuh stated his desire to assist the President in delivering democratic dividends. He said he has observed the challenges. As a patriotic Nigerian, he wants to help resolve them.
Why I Chose APC: Metuh’s Testimony
During his testimony, Metuh recounted his past travails. He stated that his former party, the PDP, offered no support during his difficulties. Only his family stood by him in court.
He contrasted this with the unexpected support from President Bola Tinubu. Metuh recalled frequent criticisms against Tinubu, then the opposition leader. Yet, during his ordeal, Tinubu sent then-Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila to visit him.
Tinubu reached out, comforted him, and provided significant assistance. This came from someone he considered a political enemy. Metuh concluded that one reaps where God wills, not necessarily where one sows. He wished the PDP well, acknowledging his dedication to the party. However, he confirmed he has moved on.
Nigeria Will Not Become a One-Party State, Says Metuh
Metuh reiterated his views on the one-party state agitation. He affirmed that numerous credible individuals exist within the opposition. These individuals will prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state. He named Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark as examples of such credible figures.
Previous Invitations from President Tinubu
Metuh revealed President Tinubu had repeatedly invited him to join the ruling party. He had consistently declined these invitations. It took him a long time to return to politics. Tinubu wanted to work with him even in 2015 after the election loss. Metuh declined then.
When he left politics in 2022, Tinubu called again, urging him to join. He refused once more. After Tinubu won the election, Metuh visited him. The President again requested him to join, stating a need for his contributions. Metuh declined, citing his departure from politics.
Now back in politics, he aims to help. He hopes to be a strong voice for maintaining a healthy polity. He stressed the importance of growing democracy and fostering vibrant opposition. Space is needed for people to express diverse views.
