Arise TV host, Oseni Rufai, recently disclosed the monthly earnings of Nigerian ambassadors. This revelation followed the nomination of new ambassadors by the federal government. Notable nominees include former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, Reno Omokri, and former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
Understanding Ambassadorial Pay Structure
Rufai shared these details via a tweet. He explained that ambassadors’ salaries are governed by the Consolidated Diplomatic, Consular and Foreign Service Cadre Salary Structure. This structure is specifically used within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassadors typically hold the top grade level, GL 17. They also receive various allowances when assigned to foreign posts.
Rufai noted that the basic salary itself might seem modest. This is especially when compared to diplomats in some other nations. However, allowances form a substantial part of their total compensation package. An ambassador’s specific earnings can also vary. Key factors include the country of posting, their experience, and fluctuations in exchange rates.
Basic Monthly and Annual Salaries
According to Rufai, an ambassador’s basic monthly pay ranges from ₦800,000 to ₦1,200,000. Annually, this translates to between ₦9.6 million and ₦14.4 million. These figures align with the earnings of other top public service officers at similar grade levels. They reflect adjustments for inflation and the proposed 2025 minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Significant Allowances for Foreign Postings
Rufai stressed that basic salary alone does not represent an ambassador’s full income. Those posted overseas receive additional support. This covers high living costs, hardship allowances, and official duties. These supplementary allowances can significantly boost their total monthly earnings. Ambassadors abroad can earn between ₦2 million and ₦5 million per month. This amount depends largely on their specific country of service.
