Veteran Nollywood actor Lere Paimo, widely known as Eda Onileola, has passed away at 86. His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian theatre.
Reports from Oleketuyi confirmed his passing. The cultural icon had bravely survived two strokes before his demise.
Oleketuyi shared the news, stating, “Chief Lere Paimo (MON) is dead.” He added that “Baba died at age 86.” He described Paimo as “a strong man” who “survived stroke twice.” Oleketuyi concluded with a prayer for the late actor’s soul.
A Storied Career in Yoruba Theatre and Film
Paimo was an extremely influential figure in Yoruba theatre and film. His remarkable career spanned over six decades.
Born in September 1939 in Oyo State, his journey into acting began early. He joined the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group in 1958.
Later, he moved to the Duro Ladipo Theatre. There, he featured in many major productions. These included the stage play Obamoro, where he famously played “Chief Basa”.
His career breakthrough came with a lead role as Soun Ogunola. This was in the Yoruba epic, Ogbori Elemosho. The role brought him national fame. It established him as a household name in traditional theatre and film.
Since 1963, Paimo contributed immensely to film. He featured in, produced, and directed many acclaimed Yoruba films. His extensive filmography includes works like Agogo Eewo (2002) and The Narrow Path (2006). He also starred in Moremi Ajasoro (2009), Saworoide (1999), and O Le Ku (1997). Further notable films are The Campus Queen (2004) and Arugba (2008).
National Recognition and Awards
His contributions to the Nigerian film industry earned him national recognition. In 2005, former President Olusegun Obasanjo awarded him the national honour. He became a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
Beyond acting, Paimo also achieved success on television. In 2014, he won a ₦1 million prize. This was during the popular TV game show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
