Nigeria will host the first-ever African Boxing Congress. A Boxing Gala Night will also take place. Both events are scheduled for Lagos on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
Officials from over twenty national federations across Africa will attend. This event marks a significant advancement for boxing on the continent.
Nigeria’s Strategic Importance in African Boxing
The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) secured hosting rights. Honourable Wale Edun leads the NBF. African Boxing approved Nigeria’s bid. African Boxing is the continent’s official boxing authority. It operates under World Boxing, the international body for Olympic-style boxing.
African Boxing praised Nigeria in a letter to the NBF. They called Nigeria “a strategic nation.” They noted its capacity to “lead a holistic advancement” of boxing in Africa.
Leadership and Commitment
The letter also confirmed Hon. Omonlei Imadu’s appointment. The NBF Vice President will join the African Boxing Working Committee. He will also serve as Head of Organisation for the December congress.
Imadu shared his excitement about the appointment. He also highlighted the opportunities this event brings.
“As a federation, we will ensure a successful event in December,” Imadu stated. He added, “I am particularly excited to host the congress in Nigeria. It will position the NBF and our nation as central to African boxing’s highest decision-making.”
Future Prospects for Nigerian Boxing
Nigeria’s successful bid brings significant advantages. The country is now a strong contender to host the 2028 Olympic Games African qualifiers. These qualifiers will be for the Los Angeles Games. The congress also paves the way for new developmental programs. These programs aim to boost Olympic-style boxing within Nigeria.
Continental Headquarters in Lagos
In another positive development, African Boxing announced a major decision. Its continental headquarters will be established in Lagos.
