Senegal football legend Aliou Cisse has tipped Nigeria’s Super Eagles. He sees them as strong favourites for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The AFCON 2025 tournament begins in Morocco on December 21. Nigeria’s Super Eagles will compete for their fourth AFCON title. Cisse listed Nigeria among several strong contenders. He also included his home country, Senegal.
Cisse’s Favourites and Predictions
Cisse, the former Senegal national team coach, now leads Libya. He expressed his strong support for Senegal. “I hope it will be Senegal,” Cisse told WinWin. “My whole heart is with Senegal because I am from there.”
However, he acknowledged other strong contenders. “Apart from Senegal,” Cisse stated, “many teams can win this AFCON.” He named Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria as top candidates.
Cisse also highlighted the AFCON’s unpredictable nature. He noted that World Cup forecasts are easier. “But the AFCON is a different story,” Cisse explained. “You can never truly predict the winner. There will always be surprises at this tournament.”
Super Eagles’ Group Stage Challenge
The Super Eagles are in Group C. They will face Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. Their tournament campaign starts on Tuesday, December 23. Nigeria will play the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Fez.
Senegal reached the 2022 final. They, along with Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria, are major threats. This AFCON edition promises to be highly competitive. Many anticipate strong challenges from these nations.
