Arne Slot remains unconcerned about his future at Liverpool, even as the club’s struggles intensify following another significant defeat.
Anfield fell silent on Wednesday night. PSV Eindhoven secured a decisive 4-1 victory against Liverpool in the Champions League. This result has only magnified the club’s alarming drop in form.
The setback marks Liverpool’s ninth loss in their last 12 matches across all competitions. Both at home and abroad, the Premier League champions are currently sliding down the standings.
Speaking after the match, Slot acknowledged that the team’s performance fell short of expectations. However, he stressed that speculation about his position is not his primary focus.
“I am not worried,” Slot stated. “My focus lies elsewhere, not on my own position. I know I need to perform better.”
He continued, “I communicate regularly with the Liverpool hierarchy. We have normal conversations. They don’t call me constantly to reassure me. I feel their trust. I haven’t spoken to them since this particular game yet, so we will see!”
Slot described the nature of the defeat as difficult to comprehend. This was especially true given the calibre of players in his squad.
“This result is very unexpected,” he commented, “considering the quality we possess. Is it a lack of confidence? I did not observe that in the first half. The mentality shown tonight is not what these players have consistently demonstrated since my arrival.”
Since taking over from Jürgen Klopp in the summer, Slot has not encountered such a challenging period. Liverpool, who were widely tipped for a strong season, now sit 12th in the Premier League. They are also 13th in their Champions League group.
The heavy loss to PSV followed consecutive 3-0 defeats. Manchester City and Nottingham Forest previously overcame them. This has intensified the sense of urgency surrounding the club.
Despite the mounting pressure, Slot reiterated his commitment. He asserted that he would not be swayed by talk of dismissal.
“I’m not worried,” he repeated when pressed about his future. “My attention is directed towards other priorities. I am not focused on my personal position.”
He concluded, “I try to analyse. I try to assist the players as much as possible. It is clear that my approach is not yielding the same results as last season. When we discuss individual errors, I believe that also stems from a collective team effort.”
