Popular Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about a deeply personal experience that brought him to tears.
The emotional moment unfolded when he witnessed his daughter, Deja, performing for the first time. He watched this significant milestone via a video call.
The acclaimed musician described feeling an overwhelming blend of pride and longing. He realised he could not be there in person to witness his daughter’s special moment.
This experience prompted him to reflect on the sacrifices involved in balancing a thriving career with the responsibilities of family.
Adekunle Gold explained that these powerful emotions directly inspired his song, “My Love is the Same.”
“When was the last time I cried? That was it,” he recounted. “It happened about two or three months ago.”
He continued, “Deja was performing, and I wasn’t there. They called me on video. They showed me, and it was her first performance ever.”
“I thought, ‘Nah, this is crazy.’ It’s like the price you pay for building your career and doing what you have to do. Of course, you also have to look after your family.”
“Yes, that’s one of the reasons I wrote ‘My Love is the Same.’ I truly wouldn’t know what others go through. It’s truly crazy.”
“Watching her throwing it down, being so confident, I just thought, ‘Oh damn, I wish I was there.’ And then, I started to cry.”
