Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He declared that “the real opposition has begun.” This move marks a new political direction for him. It comes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made this declaration on Monday. He had just received his ADC membership card. The ceremony took place at his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State. This action concludes months of intense speculation. It follows his earlier resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Atiku Declares a New Political Front
Addressing supporters, Atiku stated, “Now I have picked up my membership card of the ADC. Now, the real opposition has begun. We will chase the APC out of government.”
The former PDP presidential candidate urged his supporters. He asked them to register immediately with the ADC nationwide. Atiku described the ADC as a “new political front.” He believes it can reshape Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
Shehu Yohanna is the Adamawa ADC Chairman. He coordinated Atiku’s registration. Yohanna stated that Atiku’s entry signals something important. It officially marks the start of a statewide registration drive. This drive will cover all local governments and wards.
He also called on all Nigerians to join the party. This appeal was especially directed at women and youths. They should prepare for the 2027 polls.
Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua also spoke. He is the National Secretary of the ADC Registration and Mobilisation Committee. Yar’Adua echoed Atiku’s call. He urged citizens to register and vote. Citizens should “take ownership of the nation’s political future.”
Significant Political Realignment in Adamawa
The registration ceremony attracted several top political figures. They hailed from Adamawa State. Observers suggest this indicates a major political realignment. Notable attendees included former Governor Bindow Jibrilla. Also present were Senator Aishatu Binani, Senator Ahmed Barata, Senator Aziz Nyako, and Senator Ishaku Abbo.
Atiku had resigned from the PDP in July. He accused the party of straying from its founding principles. He also stated it failed to provide credible opposition.
