Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is poised to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday. Daily Trust gathered this information. The move is expected to proceed without any last-minute hitches.
His top aides confirmed the development to Daily Trust. They stated that all preparations are complete. Atiku will collect his membership card at Jada Ward 1, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
Earlier today, Atiku met with the Adamawa ADC leadership in Yola. He openly hinted at the move. He described the ADC as the new political platform for his supporters nationwide.
Addressing party members, Atiku spoke of a ‘new political movement’ sweeping across Nigeria. He declared, ‘Today, this new movement has brought us to the ADC.’ He then told the people of Adamawa and Nigeria that ‘our new party is ADC.’ He pointed to the seated leaders. The former Vice President asked supporters if they would formally accept him. They responded with a resounding ‘Yes.’
He added, ‘On Monday, I will officially be an ADC member.’ He acknowledged their prior membership. ‘Before now, I was not in; you were there before me,’ he said. He reiterated his question: ‘Will you accept me?’ He expressed hope for the day. ‘May God allow us to witness Monday,’ he stated. ‘It is tomorrow; we are hopeful to meet tomorrow.’
Until recently, doubts persisted regarding Atiku’s commitment to the ADC. Similar questions surrounded former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. An opposition coalition adopted the ADC in July. This coalition was jointly led by Atiku and Obi. It adopted the party for the 2027 presidential election. Their non-attendance at the unveiling of the ADC’s new national secretariat last week also raised questions. This absence cast shadows over the party’s internal cohesion.
