The newly appointed National Publicity Secretary of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong, has denounced the violent confrontation at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja. Ememobong labeled the clashes among party members as “shameful and pitiful,” expressing deep concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating democratic culture.
Democratic Decline Warning
Ememobong questioned the legitimacy of the meeting that triggered the violence. He warned that each election cycle in Nigeria shows worsening political conduct. The clashes exposed PDP members to physical danger, he emphasized.
The legal practitioner highlighted historical fatalities from tear gas inhalation during political disturbances. He accused Nigeria’s ruling party of enabling hostilities against opposition groups.
Core Democratic Principles
“Every legitimate National Executive Committee meeting requires INEC monitoring,” Ememobong stated. “It’s deeply shameful such incidents occur after six election cycles. Democratic consolidation should be firm by now.”
He stressed that democratic norms must become ingrained in Nigeria’s political culture. “In functional democracies, majorities prevail while minorities retain voice. Currently, we see minorities attempting to impose their will unlawfully,” he observed.
The spokesman expressed dismay at escalating political violence. He noted this dangerous trend contradicts fundamental democratic values Nigeria should uphold.
