The newly elected National Working Committee of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised citizens for demonstrating “solidarity, courage and resilience” during violent clashes at the party’s Abuja headquarters. Led by National Chairman Kabiru Turaki, the party stated this public support reaffirms its status as Nigeria’s preferred political movement ahead of 2027 elections.
Allegations of Coordinated Aggression
PDP officials claim compromised police officers and thugs blocked party leaders from entering the secretariat. In a statement by Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the party alleged these forces were recruited by expelled former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. They reportedly operated with endorsement from ousted FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Without provocation, attackers fired over 200 tear-gas canisters at PDP leaders. Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde were among those targeted. The assault caused a dangerous stampede. Many unarmed supporters sustained injuries during the chaos.
Democratic Principles at Stake
The PDP framed the confrontation as an existential threat to Nigeria’s democracy. “This struggle transcends our party,” the statement emphasized. “It concerns the survival of electoral democracy itself.” Party leaders warned that suppressing opposition eliminates democratic uncertainty. This transforms elections into predetermined exercises.
They specifically accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of enabling the attack. Such actions undermine multiparty democracy foundations. The PDP cautioned about rising “electoral authoritarianism” nationwide. They cited weakening institutions and the ruling party’s overreach.
Calls for Action and Resolution
Despite the violence, PDP supporters maintained their resolve. They ensured newly elected officials eventually accessed the secretariat. The party urged global democracy advocates to condemn this “brazen assault on democratic freedom.”
Security agencies received a direct appeal. The PDP requested they avoid becoming “tools for oppressors.” Forces should prioritize combating insurgency and banditry. Not facilitating attacks on opposition groups.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic norms. “PDP will resist every attempt to derail Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement concluded. “Our democratic system must endure.”
