The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) postponed its inaugural National Working Committee meeting on Tuesday after violent clashes erupted at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja.
National Chairman Kabiru Turaki announced the meeting’s rescheduling to November 19, 2025. He blamed the disruption on “deliberate attempts to undermine democracy” by factions opposing his leadership.
Security Intervention Enables Access
Turaki commended the Federal Capital Territory Police Command for providing professional security support. This assistance allowed his delegation to enter the complex despite earlier resistance. He specifically thanked the FCT Commissioner of Police for honoring security commitments.
“The disruption was caused by those undermining our party’s peace and unity,” Turaki stated. He revealed prior alerts to police about unauthorized flyers announcing parallel meetings by unrecognized party members.
High-Profile Delegation Shows Unity
The chairman was accompanied by prominent figures including Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi). National Assembly members, former governors, ex-ministers, and state chairmen joined the delegation.
Turaki interpreted this turnout as strong backing for his newly constituted NWC. He emphasized the PDP’s commitment to restoring stability amid escalating internal conflicts.
Deepening Leadership Crisis
The postponement intensifies PDP’s existing leadership crisis. The turmoil stems from last Saturday’s expulsion of former national secretary Samuel Anyanwu at the Ibadan convention.
While Turaki’s faction considers Anyanwu’s removal effective immediately, supporters aligned with Nyesom Wike insist he remains in office until December. This fundamental disagreement has split the opposition party into rival camps.
Commitment to Party Restoration
Addressing reporters, Turaki reaffirmed determination to proceed with Wednesday’s rescheduled meeting. “We’ll rebuild cohesion to strengthen our party,” he pledged. The chairman vowed to restore PDP’s position as a leading national institution despite current challenges.
