Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Kabiru Turaki has urgently appealed to former US President Donald Trump and global leaders to intervene in Nigeria’s escalating political crisis. The dramatic plea followed violent clashes between rival PDP factions at the party’s Abuja headquarters.
Turaki’s Call for International Intervention
Turaki accused Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike of deploying armed supporters backed by police to disrupt party activities. “I call on President Trump to save Nigerian democracy,” Turaki declared. “Democracy is under threat here.”
The chairman insisted his faction would defend the party’s mandate at all costs. “We’re willing to lay down our lives to protect democracy,” he stated before chaos engulfed the Wadata Plaza secretariat.
Violent Confrontation at PDP Headquarters
Parallel meetings scheduled by Turaki’s newly formed National Working Committee and Wike-backed secretary Samuel Anyanwu triggered pandemonium. Supporters shoved and fought as each faction tried controlling the compound.
Security forces struggled to contain crowds before firing tear gas canisters. Journalists, staff, and party members fled through choking smoke. Brawls involving sticks continued outside the premises.
Ongoing Leadership Crisis
The PDP remains deeply divided as both factions claim legitimacy. The violent confrontation highlights Nigeria’s volatile political climate. Resolution appears distant despite urgent calls for international mediation.
