Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has spoken about Nigeria’s crushing disappointment after failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament will be hosted across Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
Nigeria’s hopes ended in Rabat, Morocco, with a 4-3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo. This followed a tense playoff final that remained goalless through regulation and extra time.
Bassey anchored Nigeria’s defense solidly throughout the match. However, he missed the opening penalty in the shootout. His shot sailed over the crossbar, setting a difficult tone for the Super Eagles.
Speaking briefly after the match, the Fulham defender reflected: “It was nice. A lot happened but it is just what it is.” Nigeria ultimately missed three crucial penalties in the decisive shootout.
This defeat marks Nigeria’s first consecutive World Cup absence since 1986. Bassey was the only player to feature in all twelve qualifying matches for the Super Eagles.
The defender now shifts focus to club duties with Fulham. He may face DR Congo midfielder Noah Sadiki again soon. Both could feature when Fulham meets Sunderland in the Premier League.
