Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Samuel Anyanwu has dismissed the party’s recent National Convention in Ibadan as an illegitimate gathering. During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Anyanwu characterized the event as a “jamboree” rather than a valid convention.
Anyanwu asserted that the PDP failed to meet legal requirements for holding the convention. He noted that 16 states had not conducted their mandatory congresses beforehand. The entire South-East region reportedly hadn’t completed this prerequisite process.
“All that happened yesterday was a jamboree,” Anyanwu declared. He emphasized that even completed state congresses hadn’t been formally communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the Ibadan event.
The PDP leader cited widespread absenteeism among state delegations as evidence of the convention’s illegitimacy. Anyanwu mocked claims about rule compliance during the gathering.
“When I heard somebody at the convention saying we must obey party rules, I laughed,” he stated.
Anyanwu maintains that proper procedures were bypassed for the Ibadan meeting. This raises questions about the validity of decisions made during the contested convention.
