DR Congo Reinforces Squad Ahead of Nigeria Showdown
The DR Congo national team has significantly strengthened its roster by adding three Europe-based players ahead of their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Nigeria’s Super Eagles this Sunday.
FIFA has officially approved the international switch for midfielder Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Standard Liège goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo, and Anderlecht midfielder Mario Stroeykens. All three players previously represented Belgium at youth levels before utilizing FIFA’s one-time eligibility change provision.
Availability Status of New Recruits
Balikwisha and Epolo featured on the bench during DR Congo’s recent 1-0 victory over Cameroon after receiving clearance on November 11 and 12. Stroeykens missed squad selection for that match as the Congolese federation received his eligibility confirmation just hours before kickoff.
These additions provide crucial depth in midfield and goalkeeping positions as the Leopards prepare for their high-stakes encounter with Nigeria.
Nigeria Clash Details and Qualification Stakes
The crucial playoff will take place at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 PM Nigerian time. A victory for the Super Eagles would secure their progression to the intercontinental playoffs in March 2026 – the final phase of World Cup qualification.
