Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas were notably absent on Saturday. This occurred as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commenced its national convention in Ibadan. The event unfolded amid legal confusion and deepening internal divisions.
The faction loyal to Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum pushed forward with the convention. They cited an Oyo State High Court ruling authorizing the proceedings. This directly conflicted with a Federal High Court order from Abuja. That ruling had barred the party and INEC from recognizing any convention excluding former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido.
Several PDP governors attended the convention at Lekan Salami Stadium. Daily Trust confirmed the presence of:
- Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa)
- Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau)
- Bala Mohammed (Bauchi)
- Dauda Lawal (Zamfara)
- Host Governor Seyi Makinde (Oyo)
Their participation signaled the Damagum faction’s determination to legitimize the gathering. However, Adeleke and Kefas’ non-appearance sparked fresh speculation. Observers interpreted it as evidence of widening cracks within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
