Afrobeats superstar Davido recently shared a pivotal moment from his early career – the time he skipped university classes to perform at a concert in Ibadan. The Grammy-nominated artist revealed this career-defining rebellion on his Instagram during his ongoing ‘5ive Alive Tour’.
Back in 2011, Davido was balancing music ambitions with studies at Babcock University when opportunity knocked. Friends including Asa, Peju, B Red, and Sina helped him sneak off campus to join the Lynxxx and Friends Tour. The young artist had no idea this decision would air nationally on Soundcity TV – or trigger parental fury.
“I had no idea it was going to air on Soundcity, and when my pops saw it, I got in so much trouble,” Davido confessed about the incident.
Fourteen years later, Davido returned triumphantly to Ibadan, performing to packed stadiums on his nationwide tour. Reflecting on his journey, he declared: “14 years later, we destroyed the stadium. The 5ive Alive run across Nigeria has been one for the books.”
The singer also urged fellow artists to invest in Nigeria’s creative future: “To my peers, let’s build back home and give back to our roots.” After conquering multiple Nigerian cities, the tour heads to Abuja and Lagos before Davido’s birthday celebration at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on November 20th.
