The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is scrutinizing contradictory court orders concerning the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
A senior INEC official confirmed the commission’s legal department is examining all relevant rulings from courts of equal jurisdiction. The source indicated INEC will announce its decision on attending the convention before proceedings begin.
“We will definitely decide before the convention starts,” the official stated. They emphasized the legal team’s cautious approach given the sensitivity of the situation.
Conflicting Judicial Directives
The review follows divergent court judgments. One order restrains the PDP from holding its convention, while another permits the gathering to proceed as planned.
Delegates Gather Despite Uncertainty
Delegates and party leaders continue arriving in Ibadan despite the legal ambiguity. PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Kamorudeen Ajisafe confirmed sufficient attendance for convention validity.
“Delegates began arriving Wednesday afternoon,” Ajisafe stated. “We’ve secured representation from two-thirds of states, meeting constitutional requirements. Even without all 36 states, the convention can proceed under this threshold.”
