FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has dismissed speculation about Lionel Messi returning to the club as “unrealistic,” while confirming plans for a special tribute match honoring the Argentine superstar at the renovated Nou Camp stadium.
The announcement follows Messi’s emotional visit to Camp Nou last week, where the 37-year-old expressed his desire to reconnect with Barcelona beyond a ceremonial farewell. “For me to make speculation that is unrealistic, nor do I think it is fair, I believe that is not appropriate,” Laporta stated during an interview with Catalunya Radio.
Laporta acknowledged Messi’s abrupt 2021 departure resulted from Barcelona’s financial constraints rather than sporting decisions. The president admitted the exit “did not end the way he had hoped,” leaving unfinished business for both the player and supporters.
Grand Tribute Planned
Despite ruling out a playing return, Laporta emphasized plans for a historic send-off. “It would be right that he has the best tribute in the world,” he said, proposing a celebration before 105,000 fans after Nou Camp’s renovation completes.
Messi’s Barcelona legacy remains unmatched. The club’s all-time top scorer netted 672 goals across 778 appearances during his 17-year tenure. His contributions delivered 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.
