Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has refuted claims that Nigeria’s national team boycotted training to demand special bonuses. Instead, he confirmed players protested unpaid allowances owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Official Statement on Social Media
In a Tuesday post on his official platform, Troost-Ekong dismissed media reports. These suggested players sought extra payments before the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs. He emphasized:
“Once resolution is found we will confirm. Any claims about demands beyond rightful payments are false. We simply want to focus on upcoming matches.”
Rabat Training Boycott
The captain’s clarification follows a training standoff in Morocco. Players and officials skipped Tuesday’s session. This protested outstanding payments for recent achievements.
Unsettled Financial Obligations
Reports indicate the Super Eagles await allowances and bonuses. These are for qualifying for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 World Cup playoff.
Crucial World Cup Playoff Clash
Nigeria faces Gabon in Thursday’s World Cup playoff semi-final. The winner advances to face either Congo DR or Cameroon. Africa’s sole intercontinental playoff slot remains at stake.
