Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Gabon faces disruption as Super Eagles players vow to boycott Thursday’s match unless outstanding allowances are settled. Tensions escalated with no official statement from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by Wednesday.
NFF’s Silence Fuels Standoff
Shooting Stars media officer Adepoju Tobi Samuel reported via 𝕏 that players unanimously resolved not to play until the NFF clears all owed payments. Samuel noted unusual silence within the Super Eagles’ official media channels.
“Before bedtime yesterday, the players vowed not to play until debts are cleared,” Samuel stated. He revealed National Sports Commission (NSC) claims about releasing funds for the qualifiers to the NFF on Tuesday night.
Players Reject Verbal Assurances
Captain William Troost-Ekong confirmed the allowance dispute remains unresolved despite NSC interventions. The defender emphasized no agreement exists between players and the NFF regarding unpaid bonuses.
Both squad members and coach Eric Chelle’s staff reportedly received no payments, contradicting funding release claims. Troost-Ekong addressed the situation on social media, clarifying the team’s position.
“Once a resolution is found, we’ll confirm it,” he posted. “Our only demand is rightful payment. We aim to focus on upcoming matches.”
Systemic Financial Crisis Exposed
Sports photographer Pooja Media highlighted the NFF’s chronic financial issues affecting current and former players. “The players fight not just for themselves, but for Nigerian football’s future,” he stated.
The Super Eagles remain scheduled to face Gabon in Rabat, Morocco, at 5 p.m. Nigerian time on Thursday. The boycott threat casts uncertainty over this critical World Cup playoff fixture.
