The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured every chairmanship and councillorship position in Taraba State’s local government elections. This sweeping victory came after multiple opposition parties withdrew from Saturday’s polls across all 16 local government areas.
Philip Duwe, Chairman of the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC), announced the results on Sunday. He declared PDP candidates winners at both chairmanship and councillorship levels. Duwe characterized the election as “peaceful, transparent, and reflective of the electorate’s wishes.”
Seven political parties had withdrawn from the elections before voting commenced. They cited objections to the electoral guidelines issued by TSIEC. The All Progressives Congress (APC) initially challenged the guidelines in court before withdrawing its case. Reports indicate the APC’s withdrawal was partly influenced by anticipated defections to their party.
TSIEC presented certificates of return to all elected chairmen and councillors on Sunday. This formalized the PDP’s uncontested dominance in the local government elections.
