Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effectively “dead,” pointing to escalating internal crises and the departure of key figures as fatal blows to Nigeria’s main opposition party.
During a Tuesday appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Fayose revealed that the PDP’s downward spiral has intensified since his warnings a year ago. He stated that numerous influential party members have abandoned ship, leaving the organization in critical condition.
“I previously cautioned about the PDP’s troubles,” Fayose stated. “Without timely solutions, the party would die. That death has now occurred.”
The former governor elaborated using vivid metaphors during his television appearance: “I’ve consistently alerted Nigerians about this crisis. When prominent members flee troubled waters, who remains to save the party? The PDP’s core challenge is that its potential rescuers have already abandoned ship.”
Fayose’s declaration follows recent court decisions that disrupted PDP activities. The Federal High Court halted the party’s national convention and barred INEC from participating in related events nationwide. This ruling emerged from a suit by former governor Sule Lamido regarding nomination form access.
Political analysts note these developments deepen existing fractures within the PDP. The party has recently witnessed high-profile defections to the ruling APC and internal disciplinary actions against members. Fayose’s stark assessment signals deepening turmoil within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
