INEC Publishes PDP’s 2027 Presidential Candidates
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s release of the final presidential candidate list for the 2027 general election. The announcement puts an end to months of speculation about whether the party would be able to field a candidate.
In a statement issued on Sunday by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, the group said the publication of Senator Sandy Ojang Onor as the presidential nominee and Alhaji Babangida Umar as his running mate disproves claims that internal disputes would prevent the PDP from contesting the election.
The statement highlighted that opponents had spent weeks spreading misinformation suggesting the PDP would not be able to nominate a candidate due to leadership crises and ongoing legal battles. According to the faction, the INEC list has vindicated its leadership and reassured supporters about the party’s future.
“This development has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who desperately sought to convince Nigerians that the PDP would not field a presidential candidate,” the statement read. “For months, these unfounded claims were deployed as a campaign tool to mislead Nigerians, discourage our supporters and create doubts about the future of our party.”
The faction thanked PDP members and supporters at home and abroad for staying loyal during a challenging period. It praised their resilience and patience, saying their confidence inspired the leadership to focus on rebuilding the party and preparing for victory in 2027.
Appreciation was also extended to INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies for upholding the rule of law and carrying out their constitutional duties without fear or favour. The party said their adherence to due process was essential to the credible emergence of its ticket.
Looking ahead, the PDP reiterated its commitment to genuine reconciliation, inclusiveness, and internal cohesion. It extended an open hand to aggrieved members, urging them to return and emphasizing that unity is the surest path to restoring the party’s standing as Nigeria’s foremost democratic platform.
The statement also welcomed returning members and recent defectors, noting that their decisions reflect renewed confidence in the party’s leadership and programme. Together, the faction believes they can build a stronger, more formidable party capable of meeting the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
Under the leadership of National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP presents itself as a credible, competent, and unifying alternative capable of restoring hope, strengthening national unity, and delivering purposeful leadership in the 2027 election.
The publication follows a period of division within the PDP, marked by leadership disputes and court cases that raised doubts about the party’s ability to complete its nomination process before the deadline. A rival faction led by former Minister Tanimu Turaki (SAN) had attempted to field former President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming it submitted his details manually after failing to obtain an electronic access code.
