The Ikeja Cantonment Tragedy and Its Aftermath
On January 27, 2002, a devastating bomb explosion at the Ikeja Cantonment military barracks claimed hundreds of lives, left thousands injured, and displaced countless residents. The tragedy prompted an outpouring of support from corporate bodies, government agencies, and private individuals across Nigeria.
Shortly after returning from Kampala on January 20, 2002, Professor Dapo Thomas — then a Special Assistant to Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu — was tasked with coordinating visits from delegations wishing to present donations and express solidarity.
First Encounter Between Tinubu and Pedro
During this coordination effort, Thomas first met Femi Pedro, who at the time served as Managing Director of First Atlantic Bank. Pedro had arrived to offer a ₦1 million donation to the Lagos State Government.
Governor Tinubu had earlier instructed that donations below ₦5 million should be received by the Commissioner for Finance, Wale Edun, or the state’s economic adviser, Yemi Cardoso. Pedro, determined to meet the governor personally, appealed to Thomas for assistance.
Thomas promised to intervene and persuaded Tinubu to receive Pedro immediately after another institution had presented a ₦5 million cheque. When Pedro finally handed over his ₦1 million cheque, Tinubu reacted with surprise at the modest amount. Thomas discreetly collected the cheque and ensured the meeting concluded smoothly, marking the beginning of a relationship between the two men.
From Donation Meeting to Political Rise
Thomas continued to facilitate further meetings between Tinubu and Pedro, helping to solidify their bond. Less than a year later, while attending a Ford Foundation workshop in South Africa, Thomas learned that Pedro had been appointed Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
Pedro’s inauguration brought with him his Personal Assistant, Yemi Lawal, and a Special Adviser named Babajide Sanwo‑Olú. Thomas later recalled reflecting on the chain of events during a campaign photoshoot at Fototek in Opebi, where he and Tinubu’s Chief Detail, Tayo Ayinde, assisted the governor and his new deputy in changing outfits while discussing the twists of political destiny.
Legacy of the Ikeja Blast Connection
The episode illustrates how a tragic national event can unexpectedly shape political trajectories. Pedro, who once relied on Thomas’s help to secure a meeting with the governor, became Tinubu’s deputy within a year, with Sanwo‑Olú serving as his Special Adviser — a testament to the rapid shifts possible in Nigerian politics.
