A Nigerian lady has disclosed that the nearly ₦35 million she inherited from her late father allegedly caused the collapse of her marriage after her husband demanded she hand over the funds.
In a widely shared social media post, she explained that her husband was aware of the inheritance proceedings and inquired about her plans for the money once she received it.
She responded that she intended to purchase land, buy a car, enroll in a master’s program, and invest the remainder in her business.
Husband’s Demand for the Inheritance
The husband grew upset and questioned, “What role do I play as your spouse? What am I entitled to?”
When she asked why she should surrender money that her father had laboured to leave her, the discussion turned heated.
She added that he nearly assaulted her and threatened to take another wife because she was deemed “not submissive.”
In-Laws Pressured Her to Surrender the Funds
She further stated that her husband’s parents later visited their residence, spending hours urging her to transfer the entire inheritance to their son.
Feigning compliance, she said she left the home that evening with her child, stayed with a friend, and subsequently rented a new apartment.
Legal Battle and Divorce Proceedings
The woman said she eventually returned to collect her personal belongings and household items she had purchased herself.
She claimed that her husband later filed a police report, alleging she had taken his property, but records from her workplace cooperative demonstrated she had acquired the items via salary deductions, while he could not establish ownership.
In her own words:
I received nearly ₦35 million in cash from my late father. My husband was aware of the whole process, so when the funds arrived, he sat me down and asked what I intended to do with the money.
I told him I wanted to buy land, purchase a car, register for my master’s degree, and invest the rest in my business.
He took offense and asked, “What is my place as your husband? What do I get from this?”
I was genuinely puzzled, so I said I didn’t understand. He told me to forget about it, but I continued with my plans for the land and the vehicle.
He remained silent, merely observing me. Then one day he woke me and said he couldn’t believe I was acting so foolishly. He remarked that I had a husband and such a large sum, yet I refused to entrust it to him. He questioned the image I was trying to project.
I was stunned and asked, “Do you expect me to hand over the money my father worked so hard to save for me just because you are my husband?”
He exploded. The argument became so heated that he nearly struck me. He warned me to prepare for whatever came next, saying he could not remain married to a woman who was not submissive. He declared he would bring another woman into the home—one who would obey and respect him.
A few days later, his parents arrived at our house unannounced. In fact, I had just returned from work when I found them waiting.
They spent hours urging me to transfer the entire inheritance to my husband, insisting that their family would never pardon such disobedience.
My mother‑in‑law added that she had been pleading with her son not to marry another woman, believing I would eventually listen to her.
I felt extremely uneasy, as if I were being ambushed. I agreed with them and promised to hand over the money the following morning.
That evening I took my baby downstairs, pretending I wanted to buy something, but instead I went to a friend’s house and turned off my phone.
Two days later my mother came to my friend’s home to help look after my son while I returned to work.
About a month later I secured a suitable apartment and paid the rent.
I then went back to my husband’s house while he was at work and collected my belongings and my son’s possessions.
I also retrieved every item I had purchased with my own money. Only then did I realize I had bought almost everything in the house—our bed, kitchen appliances, television, and many other household goods.
Ironically, my husband earned far more than I did, yet I was the one who spent the most.
Looking back, I realized he had been living off my income.
I settled into my new home over the weekend. On Tuesday, while I was at work, the police arrived to arrest me.
My employer accompanied me to the police station.
My husband insisted that everything I had taken belonged to him and demanded proof of ownership.
He could not produce any evidence that the items were his.
A colleague fetched my workplace cooperative savings records from my office.
Every purchase I made had been processed through the office cooperative, with payments deducted directly from my salary.
The following week I served him with divorce papers.
After that he began sending me endless messages, claiming he could not live without me and saying he had only threatened me because he wanted me to become more submissive.
We are now in court.
I am finished.
