Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Remain at Chelsea
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that he wants Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez to stay at Stamford Bridge, despite ongoing speculation about his future.
Transfer Rumors and Chelsea’s Valuation
Fernandez, who is preparing for Argentina’s World Cup semi‑final against England, has been linked with a move away from Chelsea, with Real Madrid reportedly interested. The Spanish club denied pursuing the 25‑year‑old last week, while Chelsea’s reported £120 million valuation has complicated any potential transfer.
Alonso Outlines Pre‑Season Squad Plans
Speaking at his first major press conference after taking over, Alonso confirmed that Nicolas Jackson will join Chelsea’s pre‑season tour of Australia and Asia following Bayern Munich’s decision not to make his loan spell permanent.
He also revealed that Alejandro Garnacho has not returned to training, noting an agreement for the winger to stay away from the first‑team squad while he works to complete a transfer, with Roma among the clubs interested.
European Ambitions Remain a Priority
Alonso insisted that Chelsea’s failure to qualify for Europe would not significantly alter his plans, even after midfielder Andrey Santos completed a move to Manchester United shortly before the briefing.
He said the focus remains on how the team will start the competition in August, adding that the club’s sporting directors are aligned on the targets and the areas that need reinforcement.
Describing his role as a privilege and honour, Alonso expressed excitement about building on the existing foundations, fostering a competitive mentality, winning games and enjoying the process.
While acknowledging that returning Chelsea to European competition is a key objective, he stressed that success depends on consistent performances throughout the campaign and that he looks forward to having the whole squad available.
Alonso concluded by saying the early days have been positive, but the ambition to be back in Europe remains strong, urging everyone at the club to share the same energy and hunger to succeed.
