A woman has sparked online discussion after remarking on public marriage proposals, noting that many individuals copy foreign customs without grasping their full meaning.
Lady Challenges the Popular Kneeling Proposal Trend
In a widely shared clip, she argued that women who demand a kneeling proposal should also be ready to accept the associated cultural obligation.
She explained that many women envision an elaborate public proposal, with a man dropping to one knee, asking for their hand while onlookers cheer and record the scene.
However, she pointed out that this custom originates in Western tradition, where the bride’s father traditionally covers the wedding expenses.
Lady Urges Full Embrace of the Tradition
She advised women to confirm their fathers’ financial readiness before anticipating such proposals, stressing that one should not selectively adopt foreign customs.
She emphasized that adopting a foreign tradition requires accepting all its elements, not just the appealing parts.
“When you insist that your boyfriend must kneel and ask, ‘Will you marry me?’ in front of a crowd, with everyone filming and saying, ‘Please say yes,’”
“Do you realize that when he kneels to propose, it is traditionally your father who bears the wedding cost?”
“In American custom, the bride’s father finances the wedding, while the groom merely kneels to ask for her hand.”
“Before you indulge in that fantasy, ensure your father can afford the wedding; if you choose to copy another culture, adopt it wholly, not just the parts you like.”
“If your father has the funds, that’s fine—but inform him so he can prepare, since he will likely cover most expenses, from the venue to the traditional attire.”
