A UK-based lawyer of Nigerian origin, widely referred to as Baron, has declared that he has commenced the formal procedure to relinquish his Nigerian citizenship, sparking extensive discussion across social platforms.
He shared the update via his verified X account, noting that his counsel in Nigeria had filed the requisite paperwork and settled all associated fees.
Baron explained that he is presently awaiting clearance from the relevant Nigerian authorities.
He quoted, “I have just received word from my Nigerian lawyer that my renunciation application has been lodged with the SSFG and all fees have been settled. I am eager for the official go‑ahead.”
The statement provoked a flurry of responses from Nigerians, with views sharply split on the matter.

Public Reaction
ND Prince inquired about the process, expressing a desire to alter his Nigerian citizenship as well.
Blackgold said he understood Baron’s rationale and had considered a similar move, but could not abandon his Igbo identity, noting that relinquishing Igboland would mean forsaking his heritage, which he holds dear.
Tammy argued that fleeing the country does not resolve its challenges, questioning who would address the nation’s problems if everyone abandoned their citizenship, and remarked that until he departs, he remains a citizen of the troubled nation.
Adebayo Daniel sympathized with Baron’s stance and wished him success, yet insisted that, regardless of Nigeria’s difficulties, he is unlikely to relinquish his heritage and ancestral ties.
The Official Mace described the decision as regrettable, warning that it would sever children from their cultural roots and Nigerian kin, describing it as contrary to Igbo custom.
