ADC Accuses APC of Detaining El-Rufai Until After 2027 Elections
The African Democratic Party (ADC) has claimed that the embattled former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, may remain in detention until after the 2027 general elections. According to ADC spokesperson Abdullahi, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deliberately prolonging his incarceration to weaken the opposition.
Abdullahi stated that while the ADC respects legitimate legal processes, holding someone on bailable offences and imposing near‑impossible bail conditions suggests an intent to keep El‑Rufai behind bars indefinitely. “The thinking within the ADC is that the APC government has concluded they will not release Malam Nasir El‑Rufai until after the elections,” he said.
He added that releasing El‑Rufai would strengthen the opposition and remind the ruling party of issues they prefer to forget, which is why they are allegedly keeping him detained. The ADC believes the APC is using legal loopholes to achieve this goal.
Highlighting the former governor’s deteriorating health, Abdullahi warned that President Bola Tinubu would be held personally responsible if anything happens to El‑Rufai while in custody. He noted that El‑Rufai had recently been advised by the National Hospital to remain under medical watch due to failing health.
“If anything happens to Malam Nasir El‑Rufai in detention, President Bola Tinubu will be held personally responsible because the buck stops on his table,” Abdullahi asserted, describing the former governor as a political prisoner in Nigeria today.
The ADC also alleged that every case brought against the party is orchestrated to limit voter choice in the forthcoming 2027 elections, reinforcing their claim of a politically motivated detention.
