Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effectively extinct with no immediate hope of revival. He announced support for the faction led by Mohammed Abdulrahman, recently appointed as Acting National Chairman.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Fayose condemned the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee. He accused them of deliberately sabotaging the party’s future. According to him, PDP has no path to regain power in 2027.
“The party needs a unifying leader now,” Fayose stated. “I congratulate Abdulrahman as a new beginning. But currently, there’s no PDP revival hope. Even our leaders are defecting. Who will rebuild the party?”
He described the PDP as “reasonably extinct” under Damagum’s leadership. Fayose called the NWC “undertakers burying the party.” He noted their imminent departure hasn’t stopped punitive suspensions.
“Abdulrahman might become the doctor to revive PDP. But right now, the party is comatose,” Fayose added. He urged support for the new chairman to correct state-level issues and prepare for convention.
Fayose predicted Damagum won’t return as chairman. He accused him of manipulation and incompetence. “Damagum caused nationwide confusion. He wasn’t legitimate from the start,” Fayose claimed.
The crisis deepened when three PDP officials filed a court case challenging convention preparations. This triggered suspensions of Damagum and five NWC members. The factional rift continues widening.
