El-Rufai’s Wife Defends Husband’s Political Stance
Asiya El-Rufai, the wife of Kaduna State’s embattled governor Nasir El-Rufai, has pushed back against claims that her husband is seen as a political threat. She questioned why opponents would fear competition in a democratic system.
“They see him as a threat? Is he really a threat? Why not let him compete and see the outcome? What is there to fear? He is just one person — intelligent, smart, strategic, and influential — but politics is all about competition. If we have performed well, why shy away from facing the opposition?” she asked.
Loyalty to Tinubu and Expectation of Courtesy
While reiterating that President Bola Tinubu should not interfere with the ongoing trial, Asiya recalled her family’s strong support for Tinubu’s 2023 presidential bid. She said they expected only “basic courtesy” in return for their backing.
“My husband supported President Tinubu because he is an honourable man. He even took President Buhari to court to protect that agreement. I personally campaigned for Tinubu, so it is natural to anticipate some respect from someone we have helped so much,” she stated.
Call for Fair Application of the Law
Asiya acknowledged that the president may not have the authority to halt the prosecution, but he can direct the relevant agencies to act justly and uphold the law.
“The President may not be able to stop anything, but he has the power to tell them to do the right thing,” she added.
