Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri has officially confirmed his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor revealed this significant political shift during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration.
Speaking at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Governor Diri described the decision as challenging but necessary. He emphasized it was made solely in the interest of Bayelsa’s citizens. Diri had reportedly resigned from the PDP on October 15.
The governor acknowledged his move might be misunderstood initially. He assured Bayelsans that his motivations would become clearer with time. Diri stressed that politics should primarily focus on development.
He highlighted project completion and new initiatives under his administration. These achievements represent key reasons for gratitude according to the governor. Current peace and security in Bayelsa also deserve thanksgiving.
Governor’s Public Declaration
“Somebody had to make this decision for the state,” Diri declared publicly. “I acted in Bayelsa’s best interests. Though unclear now, my reasons will become evident.”
“Our priority was completing abandoned projects and launching new ones. This progress alone merits our gratitude. The current peace and security provide another reason to thank God.”
“Politics should foster development, not division. Today’s gathering demonstrates Bayelsa’s unity,” the governor concluded. His defection follows similar moves by three other governors.
Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, and Enugu’s Peter Mbah have all joined the APC within the past year. These defections mark significant political realignments across southern states.
