Senator Victor Umeh Accuses Ali Modu Sheriff of Inciting Northern Voters Against Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections
The senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has alleged that former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff is attempting to stir Northern sentiment against the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Umeh made the remarks after Sheriff’s appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where the ex‑governor claimed that Northerners would not support Obi because he is “divisive.” Sheriff further stated, “I am not worried about Peter Obi at all because I know that Northerners will never vote for Peter Obi.”
Sheriff also accused Obi of having expelled Northerners from Anambra State while serving as governor.
Responding on the same programme on Tuesday, Umeh said Sheriff’s statements amounted to incitement.
“Anyone who declares that the North will not vote for Peter Obi is inciting their people against him,” Umeh declared.
He described Obi as a peaceful politician devoted to national renewal, noting, “Peter Obi is one of the finest souls Nigeria has had. He is non‑violent and preaches peace.”
The lawmaker also defended Obi’s call for President Bola Tinubu to resign if he cannot safeguard Nigerians, asserting that Obi possesses the democratic right to criticise the president’s handling of insecurity.
According to Umeh, Tinubu has not done enough to address insecurity, economic hardship, and the soaring cost of petrol.
