A 25-year-old physician serving with the National Youth Service Corps reportedly lost his life after his sick leave request was supposedly turned down, igniting discussion across social platforms.
The deceased, Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, had fallen gravely ill while undertaking his NYSC assignment.
Doctor Sought Three‑Week Medical Leave
Sources indicate that the doctor repeatedly asked for a three‑week break to recuperate from his ailment.
Despite his deteriorating condition, the approval was allegedly withheld.
Relatives Urged for Home‑Based Treatment
Dr. Akpoyibo, who publicised the case online, said that the deceased’s father and sibling — both physicians — pleaded for him to be sent home for adequate care.
He remarked, “A 25‑year‑old medical doctor who spent seven years in medical school, finished a one‑year internship, and was serving in the NYSC was ill, requested a proper three‑week leave, but permission was denied and he has now passed away.”
He added, “Interestingly, the young man’s father and brother are also doctors. They begged that he be allowed to return home for treatment, yet their request was ignored.”
Leave Granted Only Shortly Before Death
According to the report, the physician was eventually allowed to go home, but only a few days before his demise.
His death has triggered a wave of sympathy online, with many Nigerians urging an inquiry into the alleged refusal of his sick leave.
