Ali Modu Sheriff Advises Atiku to Wait Till 2031 for Presidency
Former Borno State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Ali Modu Sheriff said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should postpone any presidential ambition until 2031. He explained that, according to a regional agreement reached after the civil war, it is currently the South’s turn to produce Nigeria’s next president, and the North must wait its turn.
Sheriff expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would secure a second term in the 2027 election, but warned that the APC would need to work hard to ensure victory. He noted that Tinubu’s first term is still ongoing and that the party must consolidate support ahead of the polls.
On the opposition front, Sheriff dismissed the presidential aspirations of former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, who is now seeking the presidency under the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He asserted that Northern voters would not back Obi, claiming that Obi’s actions as governor of Anambra State alienated Northerners.
Sheriff also alleged that Northern leaders would reject a ticket pairing Obi with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, saying that while they might support Kwankwaso alone, they would refuse to vote for him if he runs alongside Obi.
