Key allies of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike have applauded a Federal High Court ruling that halted the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) planned national convention. The group described the decision as restoring legality and confidence in Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Stakeholders Back Judicial Intervention
Prominent PDP leaders met in Abuja after Justice James Omotosho’s verdict blocked the convention. In a communiqué, they endorsed the court’s emphasis on constitutional compliance. The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to the PDP’s founding principles.
“We commend the judiciary’s courage,” the statement read. “This intervention restores order in our party. We welcome reconciliation and collective rebuilding.”
Court Affirms Key Party Positions
The ruling clarified critical leadership positions within the PDP. It confirmed Chief Dan Osi Orbih as the legitimate South-South National Vice Chairman. The court voided Chief Emmanuel Ogidi’s contested appointment to the role.
Justice Omotosho also upheld the expulsion of Ali Odefa from the party. The judgment stated expelled members lack authority to represent the PDP legally. This reinforced party discipline according to stakeholders.
Convention Requirements Emphasized
The court mandated strict compliance with legal frameworks before any convention. This includes Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, Electoral Act, and PDP guidelines. Correspondence with INEC requires signatures from both the National Chairman and Secretary.
“No valid convention can occur without due process,” the communiqué stressed. “The National Secretary remains the primary signatory for official party documents.”
Call for Party Unity and Values
Wike-aligned leaders urged members nationwide to uphold truth and justice. They described these as core PDP values promising Nigerians. The group invited all members to join rebuilding efforts based on legality.
“Stand firm for the rule of law,” they declared. “This defines our great party’s promise to the nation.”
