Renowned comedian and media figure Mr Jollof has come to the defense of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu after facing criticism for her suggestion that Nigerians pursue modest enterprises like akara, kuli‑kuli and groundnut sales.
Her comments triggered a wave of online backlash, with numerous citizens contending that Nigeria’s economic woes demand sweeping governmental action rather than mere encouragement to launch tiny ventures.
In response, Mr Jollof maintained that there is no harm in urging folks to begin from modest origins, pointing out that countless prosperous households trace their success to small‑scale trade.
He illustrated the point by noting, “I know a woman who financed the university education of more than five children through proceeds from roasted plantain, fish and akara. Even kuli‑kuli sellers enjoy steady weekend bookings, and the commodity can be shipped abroad.”
He further defended the First Lady’s track record, asserting that detractors overlook her work in health care, schooling, female empowerment and athletics, choosing instead to fixate solely on her business counsel.
According to Mr Jollof, Tinubu has bolstered primary health services, championed education, fostered women’s involvement in governance, awarded cash prizes and homes in Abuja to outstanding female sportswomen, and contributed to the National Library.
He added, “When the President’s wife backed primary health care, nobody complained. When she championed education, silence prevailed. When she ensured Nigerian women had a seat at the decision‑making table, there was no outcry. The First Lady holds no constitutional mandate; she is merely lending her support where she can.”
The discussion continues to shape dialogue about the First Lady’s statements and the extent of governmental responsibility in tackling Nigeria’s fiscal difficulties.
