Popular Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has opened up about her past relationship experiences, particularly focusing on her first marriage to the father of her first child, Ayomikun.
In a recent video shared on her Facebook page, Alabi revealed that her first partner, identified as Olaoye, never formally introduced himself to her family or performed the necessary traditional marriage rites. Despite repeated promises to do so, he never followed through, leaving Alabi to navigate the relationship without family support or validation.
She explained, “I started living with him, feeling there was no point going back to where my family was pressuring me to marry at all costs. Little did I know I had moved from the frying pan to the fire. Whenever I visited home, my father would express his concern.”
Alabi detailed how her father would question why he hadn’t met the man she was living with or any of his family members. It took repeated insistence before Olaoye finally visited one night with work friends, but this did not constitute the formal introduction expected in their culture.
Reflecting on the experience, Alabi advised, “Ladies, please listen to me: when a man sees that you are gullible or vulnerable, he can take advantage of you.” She emphasized the importance of proper courtship processes and family involvement to avoid similar situations.
