The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer a viable opposition party, stating that the PDP is “dead and awaiting its obituary.”
The ADC now claims to be the only credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that the PDP has failed in its role as an opposition party.
According to the ADC, the question is no longer whether citizens want the APC; that question has already been answered. The real question is whether ADC can convince voters that it is the only viable alternative.
The ADC also highlighted rising insecurity across various communities, noting that the menace has crippled farming and disrupted rural life. They called on the government to do more to restore peace and ensure the safety of citizens’ lives.
Former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, who spoke at the unveiling of the ADC Secretariat in Kwara, described the event as the beginning of a new political journey for the state. He stated that ADC is poised to become a party that reflects the true aspirations of the people.
However, the ADC also criticized governors who recently left the party, accusing them of “greed, avarice, and selfishness.” The party insisted that it is not governors who sustain a political party, but the people. They warned that those abandoning the platform that produced them would eventually regret their actions.
Since the 2023 general election, four sitting governors have defected from the PDP to the APC. These include Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa. The party has also lost its 2023 presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, alongside several key allies.
In response to these defections, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, dismissed the moves as products of greed. Abdullahi stated that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains a credible opposition party.
