Nigerian fashion designer and entrepreneur Tania Omotayo has voiced her concerns over the soaring cost of living in Nigeria after discovering that a pack of strawberries was priced at ₦50,000 in a Lagos supermarket.
Expressing her frustration on Snapchat, Omotayo questioned how basic fruits could become so expensive, especially at a time when many Nigerians are struggling with economic challenges. She wrote, “Are we not finished like this in this country?”
This complaint comes just one month after President Bola Tinubu directed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee on food security to accelerate measures aimed at reducing high food prices across the country.
According to Abdullahi, the President’s directive focuses on ensuring the smooth and secure transportation of farm produce across the country to reduce logistics costs, which have been a major driver of food inflation.
“The President has given a matching order with a federal executive council committee already handling it on how we are going to promote safe passage of agricultural foods and commodities across our various routes in the country,” he said.
Nigeria has been battling rising food insecurity since the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023, coupled with insecurity on highways and high transport costs that have disrupted the flow of goods from farms to markets.
Additional Context
While Tania Omotayo’s experience highlights personal struggles with inflation, it also underscores broader economic challenges. President Tinubu’s administration continues to seek solutions to stabilize food prices and ensure security for all Nigerians.
