Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, has officially defected. He moved from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Basko represents the constituency of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari. This political shift highlights growing tensions within the state’s political landscape.
The Speaker formally announced his defection on Thursday. This occurred during Governor Dauda Lawal’s presentation of the 2026 proposed budget. The timing added significant weight to the development.
This move further weakens the influence of former state governor, Abdulaziz Yari. Yari’s political standing has reportedly diminished. His decline began after losing the Senate President contest two years ago to Senator Godswill Akpabio. This latest defection deepens existing cracks within the Zamfara APC.
Hassan stated his reason for leaving the APC. He cited “deepening crises and poor leadership” at both local government and state levels. These issues, he explained, made effective participation impossible.
He formalized his exit in a letter dated December 3, 2025. The letter was addressed to the APC chairman of Galadima Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government Area. Titled “Resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, it detailed his grievances.
In his letter, Hassan reflected on “activities, crises, divisions, and being sidelined.” He also pointed to “poor leadership of the party from local government and state levels.” Based on these issues, he declared, “I have decided to step away from active participation in the party.” This clearly articulated his reasons for the move.
Hassan further explained his decision. He seeks to pursue “commitments that align more closely” with his political beliefs. He also prioritizes the developmental needs of his constituents. This move, though difficult, he deemed necessary for progress.
He expressed gratitude for his experiences within the ruling party. Basko urged the ward leadership to consider his letter as formal notice of his exit. Copies were also sent to the Zamfara State APC chairman and the Talata Mafara Local Government chairman.
