Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko, a prominent member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He has now joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Basko represents the constituency of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari. The Speaker formally announced his defection on Thursday. This occurred during Governor Dauda Lawal’s presentation of the 2026 proposed budget.
This move further diminishes the influence of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari. His political clout has reportedly waned since losing the Senate President contest to Senator Godswill Akpabio two years prior.
Basko’s departure deepens existing cracks within the Zamfara APC. It also further weakens Yari’s control over the party structure. Basko stated he left the APC due to “deepening crises and poor leadership.” He cited issues at both local government and state levels.
The lawmaker formally communicated his resignation in a letter dated December 3, 2025. It was addressed to the APC chairman of Galadima Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government Area. Titled “Resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter expressed concerns.
Basko lamented that persistent divisions within the party made effective participation impossible. The letter explicitly stated: “After careful reflection on the activities, crises, divisions, being sidelined, and poor leadership of the party at both local government and state levels, I have decided to step away from active participation in the party.”
Basko further explained his decision. He seeks to pursue “commitments that align more closely” with his political beliefs. These commitments also cater to the developmental needs of his constituents.
The lawmaker acknowledged his departure was difficult. However, he deemed it necessary for the progress of his constituents. He also expressed gratitude for his experiences within the ruling party.
Basko requested the ward leadership to accept the letter as his formal notice of exit from the APC. He confirmed that copies were sent to the Zamfara State APC chairman and the Talata Mafara Local Government chairman.
