Two lawmakers from the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC). They cited ongoing internal disputes. Leadership issues within the party were also a major factor.
The departing lawmakers are Shamsudeen Hassan Basko. He represents Talata-Mafara North Constituency. Nura Dahiru also resigned. He is the representative for Birnin-Magaji Constituency. Both sent separate letters on December 3.
Reasons for Departure
Basko explained his decision in his letter. He pointed to persistent internal crises. Poor leadership was another reason. He also mentioned members’ marginalisation. This affected both state and local levels.
Basko stated, “Persistent crises, internal divisions, and poor leadership prompted my exit from the APC.” He felt staying did not align with his convictions. It also no longer served his constituents’ best interests.
Dahiru also gave his reasons. He said his departure was essential. He wanted to pursue ideals. These ideals would better reflect his constituents’ aspirations.
Dahiru stated, “My exit from the APC allows me to serve my people better.”
Defection to PDP
After resigning, Dahiru formally joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This defection took place in Zamfara State.
