Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC). He now joins the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Basko represents the constituency of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari.
The Speaker formally announced his defection on Thursday. This happened during Governor Dauda Lawal’s presentation of the 2026 proposed budget.
Former Governor Yari’s influence in Zamfara State has significantly decreased. This decline began after his Senate President contest loss to Senator Godswill Akpabio two years ago.
Deepening Crises and Poor Leadership Cited
Basko’s departure further deepens existing divisions within the Zamfara APC. It also weakens Yari’s control over the party structure. Hassan cited “deepening crises and poor leadership” as his primary reasons for leaving. He noted these issues at both the local government and state levels.
In a letter dated December 3, 2025, Hassan formally resigned from the APC. The letter was addressed to the APC chairman of Galadima Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government Area. In it, he lamented that persistent divisions made effective participation impossible.
His resignation letter articulated his decision clearly. It cited “careful reflection of activities, crisis, divisions, sidelining, and poor leadership.” These issues, he stated, were present from the local government to the state levels. He concluded, “I have decided to step away from active participation in the party.”
Hassan further explained that his decision aligns with his political beliefs. He also aims to pursue commitments that more closely meet his constituents’ developmental needs.
The lawmaker described his departure as difficult but necessary. He believes it is vital for the progress of the people he represents. He also expressed gratitude for the experiences gained during his time with the ruling party.
Basko requested the ward leadership to accept his letter as formal notice of exit from the APC. Copies were also sent to the Zamfara State APC chairman. The Talata Mafara Local Government chairman received a copy too.
