Nigerian music sensation Yemi Alade has revealed she once battled a brief addiction to cigarettes during her university years. The award-winning artist shared this personal struggle in a recent interview.
Alade confessed she began smoking as a teenager. The habit quickly became difficult to control. She found herself needing cigarettes secretly before bedtime.
The singer admitted hiding her smoking from the public. She felt ashamed of this dependency. Alade described growing uncomfortable with her reliance on cigarettes.
She eventually realized she couldn’t sleep without smoking. This realization troubled her deeply. The addiction began affecting her vocal performance too.
Alade made a firm decision to quit. She recognized the harm cigarettes caused her voice. Her smoking phase lasted less than a year before stopping completely.
Alade’s Personal Battle With Addiction
During the interview, Alade stated: “When I was in university I tried smoking. It did not work out. But before it failed, it worked too well.”
She explained: “I started needing to smoke before bed. I was getting addicted to that lifestyle. In public, I would hide the cigarette.”
The singer questioned her actions: “What’s this life? I couldn’t sleep without smoking. Yet I hid it outside. As a teenager figuring out life, I decided: if I must hide something, I won’t do it.”
Alade concluded: “Cigarettes aren’t for me. They harmed me and affected my voice. So I stopped completely within a year.”
