William Troost-Ekong, former Super Eagles captain, has addressed rumours about his retirement. He dismissed claims of being forced out. Troost-Ekong affirmed his exit from international football was a personal choice.
On Friday, Troost-Ekong quickly countered these rumours. He responded directly to posts on X. These posts suggested punishment. They also implied he was frozen out. This was linked to criticizing the federation or internal politics.
He wrote clearly: “Not true! This was my own choice and decision. I made it on my own terms. No one ever asked or tried to force me out. In fact, the opposite happened when I shared my decision. I wish the team all the best. I support them, alongside all Nigerians, for the upcoming AFCON. I hope they go all the way.”
He reiterated his stance in another reply. “This just isn’t true, my friend!” he wrote. “I retired on my own terms. I did so for my own reasons. None of those mentioned influenced me. I wish you all the best. My full support goes to Coach Chelle and the team. I wish them well for the upcoming AFCON.”
Speculation and His Super Eagles Journey
His announcement came at a specific time. It was just days after he made Nigeria’s provisional 54-man squad. This was for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. This timing sparked much speculation. Many believed he was denied a fitting final appearance.
Troost-Ekong debuted under the late Stephen Keshi. This was after he switched allegiance from the Netherlands. He joined Nigeria in 2015. For nearly ten years, he became a prominent defensive figure. He was crucial to the team’s structure.
“Today, I am announcing my retirement from international football,” he declared. This was part of his retirement message. He reflected on his journey. He led Nigeria in World Cup qualifiers. He also played friendlies. And he competed in three AFCON tournaments.
“Captaining the Super Eagles was beyond my wildest dreams,” he shared. “Nigeria welcomed me. They trusted me to lead and represent. It is a nation of over 230 million people.”
He represented Nigeria at many major events. These included the 2016 Olympics and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He also played in three consecutive AFCONs. He won bronze in 2019. He secured silver in 2023. With three AFCON goals, he is the highest-scoring defender. This is a record in the competition’s history.
